Biography:
Maria von Trapp, born Maria Augusta Kutschera on January 26, 1905, in Vienna, Austria, was the inspiration behind the beloved musical and film, The Sound of Music. She initially intended to become a nun and entered Nonnberg Abbey as a postulant.
While at the abbey, Maria was sent to work as a governess for one of the seven children of widowed naval officer, Captain Georg von Trapp. Over time, Maria's warmth and musical talent endeared her to the children, and she eventually fell in love with the Captain.
Maria and Georg married in 1927. The family faced financial hardship during the Great Depression and began performing as a family choir. As Austria faced annexation by Nazi Germany, the von Trapp family, opposed to the Nazi regime, fled their home in 1938.
The family emigrated to the United States, continuing their musical career as the Trapp Family Singers. Maria wrote "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers" which became the inspiration for the musical and film that immortalized their lives. Maria von Trapp died on March 28, 1987, in Vermont.
